Here are some frequently asked questions about our hunting trips
Where are you located?
Both Clayton and Jess live and work in Wichita. Out hunting properties are located anywhere from 30 to 90 minute drive from Wichita. Our main base of operations is a 6000 acre farm SW of Wichita.
Is it difficult to get to Wichita?
No, Wichita is the largest city in the state of Kansas. You can easily fly into Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, airport code is ICT. Clayton or Jess will personally meet you at the airport. Unless on a fully guided hunt you will need to have a rental vehicle and we strongly suggest making arrangements to have rented a 4X4 truck or SUV.
How do I get my gun there?
Your gun should be packed in a crash resistant plastic or metal case that locks. Don't use the plastic case that's on sale at the end of hunting season for $19.95. In the US, you will need to make sure you get to the airport early enough to have your gun inspected by TSA before it is placed on the airplane. Call your airline about details of packing guns and bullets. They are the final word.
What are the hunting dates in Kansas?
In the lower right corner of this website is a link to Kansas Hunting Regulations. We will keep this link current each year with the current dates as they are set by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department as well you can find all the information you need to know about permits, licenses and application dates for your tags.
What type of shooting practice should I do to get ready for my hunt?
Make sure your rifle is shooting consistently and accurately with the ammunition you choose. If it's not, get different ammunition. If you are a bow hunter practice with the broadhead you will be hunting with. The number one rule for practicing after that is: GET OFF THE BENCH! Go to your deer lease or find a rifle range that will allow you to practice OFF THE BENCH. Shoot from the sitting and kneeling positions. Shoot off a tree limb or a tree trunk. Get a good pair of shooting sticks and shoot from those. The biggest challenge is getting your scope on the target and getting the shot off quickly. Many trophies have gotten away because a hunter waits more than 2 to 3 seconds getting everything perfect before they shoot. These trophies don't get big and old by standing around looking at you aim at them. The best way to help yourself is make sure your rifle fits well, your rifle is shooting accurately and learn to shoot very quickly after the cross-hairs are in place.
How much and what type of ammunition should I bring?
The airlines restrict how much ammunition you can carry by weight. You are allowed by South African law to bring in 200 rounds. We don't plan on you shooting that much. Most hunters bring 40 to 60 rounds of ammunition. The best bullets we have seen are Premium type ammunition loaded with Barnes X, Swift A Frame or Nosler Partition bullets. We recommend you shot a 165-200 grain bullet, whichever your rifle shoots most accurately.
What caliber rifle can I use?
Minimum caliber rifle allowed by law in Kansas is .243.
Can I bring the meat back?
Yes of course. We have local helpers in the area you will be hunting that for a fee will help you skin and cape your trophy and 1/4 out your meat as well. If you tag out early in your hunt there are multiple processors in the area that can usually get your deer processed within a couple of days. Shipping your meat back or trying to take it with you on your flight can be expensive, another reason if your time permits we recommend driving out for your hunt.
What's the weather like in Kansas
Please be prepared for any weather condition, as they all exist here in Kansas. Youth season and early bow hunters may be hunting in temps in the 70's while that same season can change quickly and you might be hunting in the snow. Kansas is also known for its famous winds, these winds can bring the northern cold or the warmth from the south. Rifle season is typically very cold here is Kansas.
What about tipping?
Tipping is never required but is greatly appreciated. If you believe you received good service from the camp staff and your professional hunter, it is customary to tip somewhere around 10% of the daily rate. If you were exceptionally pleased with the service provided by the staff and your PH, you may tip whatever you like above that. Feel free to ask your outfitter and PH if you have questions on tipping. They can give you great guidance in that area.
